Uber Technologies and BYD have entered a multi-year partnership aimed at introducing 100,000 new BYD electric vehicles to the Uber platform across key global markets.

The initiative will commence in Europe and Latin America, with plans to extend to the Middle East, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Uber, which operates an on-demand EV network globally, and BYD, a manufacturer of electric vehicles, will work together to reduce the total cost of EV ownership for Uber drivers.

This partnership is intended to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles on the Uber platform and provide millions of riders with access to environmentally friendly transportation options.

Despite Uber drivers transitioning to electric vehicles at a rate five times higher than private car owners, cost and financing remain significant obstacles. BYD vehicles, known for their affordability, lower maintenance and repair costs, and suitability for rideshare, are expected to address these barriers with a variety of models, strong battery performance, and quality construction.

The partnership may also include additional support for drivers, such as discounts on charging, vehicle maintenance, insurance, and tailored financing or lease options, depending on the specific needs of drivers in various markets.

In addition, Uber and BYD will collaborate on future autonomous-capable BYD vehicles to be integrated into the Uber platform. Uber, as the largest on-demand mobility and delivery service globally, is positioned to advance autonomous vehicle technology at scale.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said: “As the largest global agreement of its kind, we’re thrilled about the benefits this partnership will deliver for drivers, riders, and cities.

“When an Uber driver makes the switch to an EV, they can deliver up to four times the emissions benefits compared to a regular motorist, simply because they are on the road more.

“Many riders also tell us their first experience with an EV is on an Uber trip, and we’re excited to help demonstrate the benefits of EVs to more people around the world.”

BYD executive vice president and BYD Americas CEO Stella Li said: “We are elated to join forces with a global leader like Uber to not only accelerate the transition to electric vehicles but also to make green transportation accessible and affordable for everyone.

“This collaboration marks a new era in the electrification of urban mobility, and we look forward to seeing our cutting-edge EVs become a common sight on the streets of cities worldwide.”
